文質(zhì)彬彬(wén zhì bīn bīn)

　　彬彬：古代指配合協(xié)調(diào)。文通紋，指紋理。并非我們一般以為的文化。它的引申意義可以是文化。質(zhì)指質(zhì)地。引申為表里的意思文質(zhì)彬彬，紋理與質(zhì)地協(xié)調(diào)，古人認識，比如石頭，其有紋理，其有質(zhì)地，如此構(gòu)成石頭的認識。引申到對事物的認識，人的認識也是如此。言語用文質(zhì)來指代。從這個意義上說，其實紋理與質(zhì)地比表里的說法更形象。

　　【注譯】①質(zhì)：樸實、自然，無修飾的。②文：文采，經(jīng)過修飾的。③野：此處指粗魯、鄙俗，缺乏文采。④史：言辭華麗，這里有虛偽、浮夸的意思。⑤彬彬：指文與質(zhì)的配合很恰當。

　　【譯文】孔子說：“質(zhì)樸多于文采，就像個鄉(xiāng)下人，流于粗俗;文采多于質(zhì)樸，就流于虛偽，浮夸

　　。只有質(zhì)樸和文采配合恰當，才是君子。”

　　【評析】這段話確切說明了文與質(zhì)的對立統(tǒng)一，文與質(zhì)相依存、不可分離、同樣重要，以此比喻理想的君子人格模式——文質(zhì)彬彬。因而，孔子表達的”文質(zhì)彬彬'與現(xiàn)在的含義，是有一定的區(qū)別。
